The Ottawa Senators have named Thomas Chabot as the 11th captain in franchise history.
The 29-year-old defenceman is entering his 10th full season with the Senators after being selected 18th overall in the 2015 draft. Signed through next season at a cap hit of $8 million, Chabot has 78 goals and 335 points in 569 games.
Chabot replaces Brady Tkachuk after he was traded to the Florida Panthers in June. Jake Sanderson and Tim Stutzle were previously also considered candidates to take over the role.
“Thomas exemplifies everything we want in an Ottawa Senator,” said Senators president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios. “He’s commited to the city and to the organization. He puts the team first.”
“We’ve always said it. Ottawa feels like home. It really does,” added Chabot. “We bought our first house here. We started our family here. Becoming captain here is a huge honour. ”
Tkachuk was named captain of the Senators prior to the 2021-22, holding the role for five seasons before he was traded to the Florida Panthers in June.
Ottawa went without a captain for three years before choosing Tkachuk to lead the franchise after trading Erik Karlsson to the San Jose Sharks just prior to the 2018-19 campaign.
Karlsson had a four-year run as captain after Jason Spezza wore the “C” in 2013-14. Prior to Spezza, Daniel Alfredsson spent 13 seasons as captain of the Senators.
