Detroit Red Wings defenceman Simon Edvinsson remains unsigned as he and the club continue their standoff.
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reported Tuesday that the 23-year-old blueliner and his agent met with Red Wings interim general manager Shawn Horcoff late last week to ‘lay their cards on the table.’
“It’s a clear understanding, especially where the player is. He feels this has dragged out so long that the most logical option for him is probably a trade,” LeBrun said on Tuesday’s Insider Trading. “He stopped short of making an official trade request like his teammate Dylan Larkin did.”
Horcoff has previously said he is not entertaining trade talks for Edvinsson, and that the team’s goal is the sign him. However, LeBrun adds that Detroit continues to have trade talks with up to 10 interested teams, should the situation continue to deteriorate.
“Horcoff still wants to sign him and is still holding out hope there, but he continues to have trade talks,” LeBrun said. “There are up to 10 teams that continue to be involved in these talks, and I’m told the San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins are among the teams that are interested. We’ll see where this goes.”
If the Red Wings were to entertain trading the young defenceman the ask would be similar to the acquisition prices of Noah Dobson, Mikhail Sergachev, Bowen Byram, and Simon Nemec, which would include multiple assets including prospects and first-round draft picks.
The 23-year-old Edvinsson scored nine goals with 25 points in 72 regular-season games in 2025-26.
He is coming off his three-year, entry-level contract.
Internationally, he helped Sweden win bronze medals at the U18s, World Juniors and World Championship.
In 175 career NHL games, the Onsala, Sweden native has scored 19 goals and 60 points.
The Red Wings are 3-3-3 through nine games and currently sit last in the Atlantic Division with nine points.
