Stars’ Benn receives maximum allowable fine for cross-checking Hartman in Game 5

Published:

Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn has received a maximum fine from the National Hockey League Department of Player Safety for cross-checking Ryan Hartman of the Minnesota Wild.

The fine totals $2,604.17, which is the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Late in the third period of Game 5 on Tuesday, Benn appeared to take exception to some late contact from Hartman. Benn followed Hartman into the corner and gave a quick cross-check to his ribs before lining up a cross-check to Hartman’s head that sent the forward to the ice.

Both players were penalized on the play - Hartman received two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct, while Benn was given two minutes for cross-checking.

The Stars were trailing 3-1 at the time of the penalty. A goal from Jason Robertson not long after cut the deficit to one, but Kirill Kaprizov scored a goal on an empty net with two minutes remaining to send the Wild to a 4-2 victory and a 3-2 lead in the series.
