Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin insists that there is no new update involving his star defenceman Quinn Hughes, he told the Chad Hartman Show of WCCO Talk 830 in Minnesota on Wednesday.
Hughes, 27, was acquired by the Wild from the Vancouver Canucks in December of 2025 in exchange for forwards Liam Ohgren, Marco Rossi, defenceman Zeev Buium, and a 2026 first-round draft pick.
The Wild have been on the clock since acquiring the 2024 Norris Trophy winner with him in the final season of his six-year, $47.1 million contract and pending unrestricted free agency.
“There’s nothing to talk about right now,” said Guerin. “What am I going to do, say ‘Please, please, please?’”
Guerin’s comments comes days after Hughes made his return to Vancouver where reporters asked him about his future.
Hughes reiterated that he is fully committed to the Wild at this time and is focused on making sure his team is in the best possible position to make the playoffs.
“I’m where I’ve always been. I’m excited right now. My two feet are planted in Minnesota and you know, something could happen soon,” Hughes told reporters on Saturday. “I’m not really sure. I’m really enjoying playing here… there’s a lot of things that are set up nicely here for me to have success individually and as a team.
“We have a great team. First thing, is you want to get into the playoffs but I would think that we have a chance to win this year.”
Guerin said he hasn’t really thought about what his plan would be if Hughes doesn’t commit to a long-term contract before the NHL trade deadline on March 1.
The 2026 Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year winner may have the difficult decision between keeping Hughes and risk him leaving for nothing as a free agent or trading him before the deadline with his team competing for a Stanley Cup.
“I haven’t really decided, at some point in time I’ll have to try to figure things out and see what’s best for the team,” said Guerin. “I know one thing’s for sure: having Quinn on our team is what’s best for the team.
“And, you know, I don’t know. I’ll be completely honest with you, I don’t know. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t know what I’m going to do. There’s no date. What we’re doing right now is focusing on our team and trying to win hockey games. That’s really it. I think some people want to make this more complicated than it really is — being the media. And it’s not that complicated.”
The Wild are second in the NHL entering Wednesday’s action with a 9-3-2 record and are four points ahead of the Utah Mammoth in the Central Division.
Hughes is continuing his dominance from the blueline with three goals and 18 points in 14 games. He is second in the league in ice time by averaging 27:11 and fourth in the NHL with 15 assists.
