GLASGOW — Canada’s Alex Bellemarre won a silver medal in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.
Competing in the men’s 94-kilogram category, the 28-year-old from La Sarre, Que., set an event record of 159kg in the snatch before lifting 187kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 346.
Mohamad Syahmi Bin Nor-Ghazali of Malaysia eclipsed him for gold with a total of 347 after posting a Games record of 197kg in the clean and jerk. Oliver Riley Saxton of Australia took bronze with 336.
Elsewhere, the Canadian men’s and women’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball teams were scheduled to play for bronze after losing their respective semifinal matchups to England earlier Wednesday.
The Canadian men take on Scotland, while the women face Australia for third place.
Later Wednesday, the women’s and men’s 4x100-metre relay teams qualified for their finals as swimming events come to a close in Glasgow. In athletics, two-time world indoor champion Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn, N.S., competes in the women’s shot put final.
