Report: Hamilton expected to get PWHL franchise

It appears the Professional Women’s Hockey League is adding another Canadian franchise.

According to the Hamilton Spectator, a deal has been finalized with an announcement expected to occur on Thursday morning at TD Coliseum, the downtown venue that will also serve as the arena for the new team.

Hamilton hosted a well-attended PWHL game in January, putting the city into “serious contention” to get an expansion team, according to The Spectator.

Hamilton is not the only place that will see a professional women’s hockey team come to their city.

Last week, the PWHL officially announced Detroit would be getting a team next season, the ninth franchise for a league that is currently in it’s third year of existence.

Multiple sources have confirmed Las Vegas will also be getting a team with an official announcement expected this week.

According to reports, a fourth expansion team could be announced in the coming weeks, bringing the league total to 12 for the 2026-27 campaign.

The Seattle Torrent and Vancouver Goldeneyes were expansion clubs in 2025-26 joining the original six teams in the Montreal Victoire, Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, Ottawa Charge, Toronto Sceptres and New York Sirens.
