CanMNT striker Cyle Larin has been named the August EFL Championship Player of the Month after a blistering start to his second season at Southampton.
Larin, 31, scored four goals in three matches in August, including an brace in the Saints’ 5-1 thrashing of Millwall in the Championship.
He is tied with Middlesbrough forward Will Lankshear for the top scorer in the EFL with five goals to open the year.
The Brampton, Ont. native has carried over his form from this summer’s FIFA World Cup, in which he scored two goals for Canada during their run to the Round of 16, their highest-ever finish at the competition.
Larin scored Canada’s first World Cup goal on home soil with a late equalizer in a 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina, and later followed that up with the opening marker in a 6-1 dismantling of Qatar.
He joined Southampton on loan last season following a stint with Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, where he quickly made an impression with eight goals in 16 matches.
Larin would then make a permanent move to Southampton, signing a two-year deal with the club in June just before the start of the World Cup.
The Saints currently sit 13th in the Championship, taking seven points from their first six matches.
