Jamal Musiala marked his first start since collapsing twice last month with a goal in Bayern Munich’s comprehensive 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League.
Musiala caused alarm during preseason fixtures against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim in August when he collapsed in consecutive matches in the space of four days before revealing he was suffering from “treatable absence seizures.”
After a spell on the sidelines, Musiala returned from the bench in Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Schalke before he provided the breakthrough in a five-goal win for Vincent Kompany’s men at Allianz Arena with Harry Kane, Alphonso Davies and Michael Olise on target.
Kompany recalled Ballon d’Or nominees Kane and Olise alongside the fit-again Musiala for this maiden league phase fixture of the campaign.
After Bayern fired a blank last weekend, Luis Díaz sent an early header wide before a curled effort by Kane was routine for Bodo goalkeeper Nikita Haikin.
Diaz had penalty appeals waved away midway through the first half before Olise started to become more prominent and the deadlock was almost broken in the 36th minute.
Joshua Kimmich let fly from range and struck a post and further opportunities in the same move were halted by the offside flag.
Musiala tested Haikin on the stroke of halftime after a wonderful run, which ensured the game was still goalless at the break to make it more than 135 minutes without a goal for Bayern.
However, Musiala ended that drought just 77 seconds into the second half when he rifled home on the turn following a corner to mark his return to the starting lineup with a goal.
Bodo had already been forced to withdraw Haikin at halftime due to injury and backup goalkeeper Julian Faye Lund’s introduction was marked with him conceding immediately.
Bayern’s 900th goal in European football was soon followed by another when Kane headed home after 61 minutes.
A dangerous free kick delivery by Olise was nodded in by Kane to make it a goal in eight consecutive Champions League matches.
Musiala was replaced to enormous applause with 25 minutes left before Bodo threatened when Andreas Helmersen’s ambitious effort from range went over.
It was 3-0 with 77 minutes on the clock when Davies produced a sumptuous half-volley after a corner had been cleared out to the Canadian.
Olise got in on the act six minutes later when the winger cut inside and curled the ball into the top corner for Bayern’s fourth.
There was still time for Olise to help reduce Bodo to 10 men after Odin Bjortuft brought down the France international and the icing on the cake arrived in stoppage time when ex-Crystal Palace forward angled another strike high into the net to make it 5-0.
