Longtime CanMNT defender Vitoria announces retirement

Steven Vitoria is hanging up his cleats.

The longtime Canada defender has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.

The Toronto native appeared in eight matches for Boavista last season.

“With my heart full of gratitude, today I announce the end of my 20-year professional playing career,” Vitoria wrote on his private Instagram account. “A sincere thank you to everyone I had the pleasure of meeting and growing with along this journey.”

A product of the Porto academy, Vitoria spent almost the entirety of his professional career in Portugal. He made his senior debut for second-division side Tourizense in 2006. He made his Primeira Liga debut with Estoril in 2012.

Vitoria went on to join Benfica before a season on loan with Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer before three seasons in Poland with Lechia Gdansk. He returned to Portugal in 2019 with Moreirense before joining Chaves in for a pair of seasons in 2022.

Internationally, Vitoria represented Portugal at a number of youth levels before switching international allegiance to Canada in 2016. He would go on to make 46 appearances in a Canada shirt and was a member of the squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
