Timo Werner appears poised for Major League Soccer.
The Athletic’s Timo Werner reports the San Jose Earthquakes are nearing a deal with RB Leipzig to sign the 29-year-old former Germany forward.
Werner would arrive as a Designated Player.
A native of Stuttgart, Werner is in his second spell with Leipzig. He’s appeared in three games this season. Prior to the current campaign, he spent the previous 18 months on loan at Tottenham Hotspur where he had two goals in 31 Premier League appearances.
A product of the Stuttgart academy, Werner made his pro debut for his boyhood club in 2013. He joined Leipzig in 2016 in a €10 million deal, then the largest deal in the club’s history. In 127 Bundesliga games over four seasons, Werner scored 78 goals.
In 2020, Werner joined Chelsea in a £47.5 million move. He would spend two seasons at Stamford Bridge, winning the Champions League in 2021, before returning to Leipzig in 2022 for £25.3 million.
Internationally, Werner was capped 57 times by Germany between 2017 and 2023. He appeared at the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020. Werner recorded 24 goals in a Germany shirt.
