Hull City is back in the Premier League, but could Liam Millar be returning to the Championship?
Sky Sports’ Tim Thornton and Rob Dorsett report the Tigers could use the Canada winger as a makeweight in a bid to land Wales winger Sorba Thomas from Stoke City.
Coincidentally, the 26-year-old Millar captained Hull to a 1-1 (5-4 on penalties) victory over the Potters on Tuesday in League Cup action. The Toronto native picked up an assist on Kieran Dowell’s goal and was successful with his spot kick in penalties.
Thornton and Dorsett report Stoke is asking for at least £10 million for the 27-year-old Thomas, who joined the Potters last summer. While Hull isn’t ready to pay that kind of money, the presence of Millar in the deal could take the fee down to something more acceptable. The duo also notes that a number of other Championship sides are interested in Millar, but staying at Hull remains very much on the table.
A product of the Liverpool academy, Millar is in his third season with Hull following a transfer from Basel. He made 44 league appearances over the past two campaigns. He played 20 minutes in the Tigers’ 2-0 win over Manchester United this past Saturday to kick off Hull’s first season back in the top flight since 2015.
Internationally, Millar was handed his first senior cap in 2018. He’s made 37 appearances for Canada, scoring once in a 2023 Gold Cup game against Cuba. He appeared in three games for Canada at this summer’s World Cup.
Hull returns to league play on Saturday with a visit to 2026 Championship winners Coventry City.
