Jonathan David is no longer the only Canadian flavour at Atletico.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has joined the team’s ownership group, the La Liga giants announced on Thursday.
A native of Hamilton, Ont., Gilgeous-Alexander is heading into his ninth NBA season and is coming off of back-to-back Most Valuable Player campaigns.
The move comes after the 28-year-old guard made an investment in Hamilton’s renovated TD Coliseum earlier this year. The building’s new atrium is named after Gilgeous-Alexander’s son, Ares.
The Kentucky product is a four-time All-Star, four-time All-NBA selection and was the 2025 NBA Finals MVP when the Oklahoma City Thunder claimed the franchise’s first title since its relocation.
The Thunder open up their 2026-2027 season on Oct. 20 with a visit to the Western Conference champion San Antonio Spurs.
Atleti currently sits second in the table after seven matches, five points behind leaders Barcelona. Ottawa’s David, on loan from Juventus, has three goals in his first three league matches for the team. Diego Simeone’s side returns to action following the international break on Saturday with a visit to sixth-place Alaves.
