Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero’s propensity to speak his mind on social media has once again put the spotlight on the Argentina centre-back, but manager Thomas Frank says the matter has been addressed.
Following the team’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City last weekend in which an ill Romero was withdrawn at halftime, Romero was critical of the state of his team.
“I wanted to be available to help them, even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially since we only had 11 players available – unbelievable but true and disgraceful," Romero wrote.
The post came on the heels of another inflammatory post after a 3-2 loss to Bournemouth at the end of January where Romero appeared to knock ownership.
“Apologies to all fans… At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they don’t – as has been happening for several years now," Romero wrote. “They only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies.”
Ahead of Saturday’s visit to Old Trafford to take on a resurgent Manchester United, Frank was asked about Romero’s latest post during his pre-match availability.
“Yeah, I think if you want to know what he meant you of course need to ask him,” Frank said. “I think that’s the right way to take that question. Cuti is a very passionate character and player that wants to leave everything on the pitch and is very ambitious and want to win every single time. Sometimes when you are like that, sometimes there can come an outburst, it happened this time and it’s something we have of course dealt with and dealt with internally.”
While struggling in the league, Spurs currently sits 14th in the table and trails United by 12 points for the final Champions League spot, the team has enjoyed a successful European campaign, thus far. Spurs finished in fourth place in the Champions League league phase and earned a bye into the Round of 16.
Spurs will now play one of the two winners of the Juventus-Galatasaray and Atletico-Club Brugge playoff ties with Liverpool playing the other.
