Manchester United midfielder Jack Fletcher has been suspended six games by the Football Association for directing a homophobic slur towards an opponent.

The incident in question came in the United academy’s 5-2 loss to Barnsley in an EFL Trophy match in October when Fletcher was shown a straight red card.

“I am truly sorry for the offensive word I used in the heat of the moment,” the 18-year-old Fletcher said in a statement. “I completely understand such language is unacceptable and immediately apologized after the game.”

A native of Manchester, Fletcher is the son of United legend Darren Fletcher and the twin brother of Red Devils midfielder Tyler Fletcher. The England U-19 player made his senior debut for the club in December against Aston Villa and has made three substitute Premier League appearances this season.
