VANCOUVER — The Vancouver Whitecaps have transferred U.S. World Cup midfielder Sebastian Berhalter to English Championship club Middlesbrough, the team announced Tuesday.
The 25-year-old leaves after four-and-a-half seasons in Vancouver, with the Whitecaps retaining a sell-on percentage in any future transfer. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said Berhalter's development and consistent performances made it inevitable he would attract interest from clubs in Europe.
"We have been in open and ongoing discussions with Sebastian and his representatives about his future," Schuster said in a statement. "It was always clear that if the right opportunity to move to Europe presented itself, he wanted the chance to pursue that challenge."
Berhalter made 167 appearances for the Whitecaps, recording 20 goals and 34 assists across all competitions.
He helped Vancouver win four straight Canadian Championships, reach the 2025 CONCACAF Champions Cup final and capture the 2025 MLS Western Conference title.
Berhalter was named to the 2025 MLS Best XI and earned all-star selections in each of the past two seasons.
"The memories and the relationships I've built here will last a lifetime, and seeing how much this club has grown makes me so proud," Berhalter said of Vancouver. "I'm incredibly grateful that this club took me in as a boy and helped me grow into a young man. I'll be a Whitecap forever."
He represented the United States at this summer's World Cup, becoming the first MLS player to record both a goal and an assist in the same World Cup match, a 3-2 group-stage loss to Turkey.
Berhalter had been named to the MLS all-star roster for Wednesday's game against Liga MX in Charlotte.
The Whitecaps (10-3-3) resume MLS play Saturday when they host Los Angeles FC in a matchup of the top two teams in the Western Conference.
