Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana exited Monday’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match against the U.S. in the opening half with an apparent knee injury.
Onana went down after attempting to play a ball in the 18th minute. He kicked out with his right leg and landed awkwardly as he fell, immediately grabbing at his right knee while on the ground.
Onana was slow to get to his feet and gingerly limped off the pitch. His teammates comforted him as he exited the playing field. Hans Vanaken replaced Onana in the 21st minute.
The 24-year-old Aston Villa man was making his fourth appearance at this year’s World Cup. He started in Belgium’s tournament opener against Egypt on June 15 and came on as a substitute in each of the Red Devils’ previous two games.
Belgium led 1-0 at the time of Onana’s departure.
The winner of Monday’s matchup in Seattle will play Spain in the quarter-finals at the World Cup.
