Jonathan David is perfectly happy in Serie A.
The Canada forward tells Italian outlet RSI Sport that, despite transfer rumours, he intends to stay at Juventus. A report from Corriere dello Sport earlier this week indicated that the Old Lady would accept a fee of £26 million for the player.
“I have a five-year contract, so as far as I’m concerned, I’m still here,” the 25-year-old David, who notched a hat-trick in Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar on FIFA World Cup Matchday 2, said.
Born in Brooklyn and raised in Ottawa, David joined the Bianconeri on a free transfer from Lille, where he became Les Dogues’ all-time leading scorer of the modern era with 109 goals over five seasons, and endured an uneven first season in Torino. He finished his year with six goals and four assists in 30 league matches and eight goals across all competitions.
David hopes his good form at the World Cup can translate into league play, but he acknowledges that it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison.
“I think it’s always different when you play for a club or for the national team because, first of all, they’re different teams,” David said. “The style of play is very different, so everything changes a bit.”
David and Canada play in their final group-stage match later on Wednesday against Switzerland in Vancouver. A point from the game will see Canada finish atop Group B. A loss likely means a date with South Korea in the Round of 32 on Sunday in Los Angeles.
