A two-match ban for England centre-back Jarell Quansah after his sending off in the Three Lions’ FIFA World Cup Round of 16 victory over Mexico was confirmed by FIFA on Thursday.
The Bayer Leverkusen defender will now miss the team’s quarter-finals tie with Norway on Saturday and would not be available for the semis should England advance.
A breach of Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code was cited as the basis for the suspension. Quansah was sent off in the 54th for a reckless challenge on Jesus Gallardo. There was no booking initially, but the straight red was confirmed following a VAR check.
There was some speculation that the English FA could appeal Quansah’s suspension on the basis of U.S. president Donald Trump’s intervention with FIFA president Gianni Infantino to help overturn United States forward Folarin Balogun’s suspension against Belgium following his straight red in a Round of 32 contest against Bosnia and Herzegovina. No appeal was made.
A 23-year-old native of Warrington, Quansah has been capped five times by England and is at his first major tournament with the senior side.
