On Friday, Dec. 5, the final draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place from the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

TSN will have a full 12 hours of coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Draw beginning at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT on Dec. 5.

The draw will flesh out the 12 groups set to compete in the expanded 48-team World Cup that will see 104 matches played, beginning with the Group Stage on June 11 and ending with the World Cup Final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New York.

Co-hosts Canada, Mexico, and the United States have been assigned positions – No. 15 Mexico in Group A, No. 27 Canada in Group B and the 14th-ranked United States in Group D.

The three co-hosts and the nine top-ranked teams will be placed in Pot A, with the remaining entries divided by descending ranking in Pot B, C and D.

The draw will begin with all the teams from pot 1 being drawn to Groups A to L. It will then continue with pots 2, 3 and 4 in that order.

What are the World Cup Draw Pots?

Pot 1: Canada, Mexico, U.S., Spain, Argentina, France, England, Brazil, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany.

Pot 2: Croatia, Morocco, Colombia, Uruguay, Switzerland, Japan, Senegal, Iran, South Korea, Ecuador, Austria, Australia.

Pot 3: Norway, Panama, Egypt, Algeria, Scotland, Paraguay, Tunisia, Ivory Coast, Uzbekistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa.

Pot 4: Jordan, Cabo Verde, Ghana, Curaçao, Haiti, New Zealand, European Playoff A, B, C and D, FIFA Playoff Tournament 1 and 2.

What could Canada’s World Cup Group look like?

After the announcement of the draw pots, it’s possible that Canada could open its 2026 World Cup campaign on June 12 at Toronto’s BMO Field against No. 66 Jordan, No. 68 Cabo Verde, No. 72 Ghana or No. 86 New Zealand or No. 12 Italy.

Under the draw procedures, Canada will open Group B play against the team drawn from Pot 4 before heading west to Vancouver, where it will face the team from Pot 3 on June 18 and then the side from Pot 2 on June 24.

A worst-case scenario could see Canada face No. 10 Croatia, No. 11 Morocco or No. 13 Colombia from Pot 2, No. 29 Norway or No. 34 Egypt from Pot 3 and No. 12 Italy or No. 21 Denmark from Pot 4.

Canada cannot face another team from CONCACAF in its opening group.

Canada was grouped with No. 2 Belgium, No. 12 Croatia and No. 22 Morocco at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Canadians lost all three matches and will be looking for their first win in their third trip to the tournament.

What is the World Cup Draw Procedure?

The draw will sort 12 groups of four teams, consisting of one team from each pot.

FIFA recently announced a number of changes to the draw procedure.

The top four teams in the FIFA Rankings are now separated into different quarters of the draw. Assuming each of these teams progresses via winning their groups, it would set up semifinal matches between the No. 1 and No. 2 teams on opposite sides of the draw.

Another amendment is the predetermined order of matchups. In Canada’s case, the team has already been drawn into Group B, knowing when and where they will take on opponents from the different pots.

There are still six World Cup spots to be determined through the UEFA and Intercontinental Playoffs. All the playoff teams will be placed into Pot 4, regardless of world ranking.
