Kone, Davies, Bombito on field for CanMNT’s last day of training ahead of Friday’s opener

With the start of Canada’s FIFA World Cup now less than 24 hours away, midfielder Ismaël Koné as well as defenders Alphonso Davies and Moïse Bombito were all on the field for the last day of training on Thursday.

Canada will play Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday at Toronto Stadium.

Watch Canada take on Bosnia and Herzegovina LIVE Friday with pre-match coverage beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET / 11:30 a.m. PT on TSN1/3/4, TSN.ca, and the TSN App ahead of the 3 p.m. ET kickoff.

Kone missed Canada’s training on Wednesday, leaving the practice session before it started with a reported fever.

The 23-year-old Koné produced six goals in 36 appearances with his club team Sassuolo of Serie A in Italy this season.

He has four goals in 40 career appearances with the national team.

Bombito, who was named to Canada’s official 26-man roster on Thursday, was also on the field despite his status for the World Cup being up in the air as he continues to recover from a leg injury suffered last year.

A 26-year-old Montreal native, Bombito broke his leg during an October draw with Monaco. His recovery was complicated with the New Hampshire product missing the remainder of the Ligue 1 season. He made his return to action earlier this month in Canada’s 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan in Edmonton, but was forced off after only 31 minutes, limping to the back in obvious discomfort. After missing out in last Friday’s Ireland friendly, Bombito played a half-hour in a closed-door scrimmage last weekend.

Bombito has 20 career appearances for the national team.

Davies, the 25-year-old Bayern Munich talent, suffered a hamstring injury last month during Champions League action, putting his World Cup status in doubt.

Last week, Davies left the door open a tad, regarding his potential availability for the clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The first game is coming up pretty quickly,” he said. “We understand how important the first game is, but we understand recovery is always an important thing. If I’m recovering as good as possible, let’s see. If not, then there’s no need to rush. Just keep continuing the recovery.”

“Anything is possible in life,” Davies added. “For me, it’s (all) depending on how the recovery is going, how these next few days or this week leading up to the game goes.”

Davies, who grew up in Edmonton, scored one goal over 23 games with Bayern Munich this season.

He has 15 goals over 58 career games with the national team, including scoring Canada’s first-ever goal at the men’s World Cup against Croatia at the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

After the game on June 12, Canada will play Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24 in their Group B finale. Both games will take place at BC Place in Vancouver.
