Davies remains in return to play protocol, Kone absent from Canada training

The Canadian men’s national team had a lighter training day on Wednesday, two days before before kickoff of their opening game of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Toronto Stadium.

TSN’s Matthew Scianitti reports the squad went though a light training session with individual drills foe players and position groups.

There was no change in the status of Moise Bombito, Alphonso Davies and Ralph Priso. Bombito remained in modified training, while Davies and Priso once again were in the return to play protocol.

Ismaël Koné was absent from practice. Canada Soccer has yet to provide an update on his status.

Bombito (leg) is in training tailored to specific recovery with some supervised participation in team drills, for the third consecutive day,

Davies (hamstring) and Priso (hamstring) continue to work with a focus on light training ramping up to team drills.

“The first game is coming up pretty quickly,” Davies told reporters last week. “We understand how important the first game is, but we understand recovery is always an important thing.

“If I’m recovering as good as possible, let’s see. If not, then there’s no need to rush. Just keep continuing the recovery.”

Watch Canada take on Bosnia and Herzegovina LIVE Friday with pre-match coverage beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET / 11:30 a.m. PT on TSN1/3/4, TSN.ca, and the TSN App ahead of the 3 p.m. ET kickoff.

Priso is a leading candidate to replace Bombito should the defender be ruled out of the tournament. Bombito broke his leg last October and returned to play 30 minutes in a friendly last week against Uzbekistan before limping off the field.

Head coach Jesse Marsch said Sunday he will give Bombito “up until the last minute” to show he can be ready at any point in the tournament.

Canada has until June 11 at 3 p.m. ET - 24 hours prior to its opening World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina - to draw a replacement from the team’s provisional 55-player roster, if Bombito does not show the form Marsch is looking for.

Canada named Jayden Nelson to the roster on Tuesday as the injury replacement for Marcelo Flores, who tore his ACL one day after being named to the team.

Jacob Shaffelburg (hamstring), Ali Ahmed (hamstring), Alfie Jones (ankle) are all coming into the tournament with injuries but have been full participants in practice this week.

Canada will be going for their first-ever victory at the World Cup on Friday after having gone winless in both of their previous appearances at the tournament in 1986 and 2022.

After Friday’s game, Canada will head to Vancouver for meetings against Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24.
