Switzerland’s Embolo scores first penalty shot at 2026 FIFA World Cup against Qatar

Breel Embolo got Switzerland on the board first in their Group B matchup against Qatar at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday.

Switzerland was awarded a penalty shot in the 17th minute as Qatar’s goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada was given a yellow card for taking out Swiss striker Remo Freuler in front of the net.

Embolo took the penalty shot for Switzerland and made no mistake, beating Abunada cleanly to give the Swiss a 1-0 lead in San Francisco.

It was also Switzerland’s first ever penalty shot goal at a World Cup.

Embolo, 29, is playing in his third World Cup after representing his country in 2018 and 2022.

Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina are tied atop Group B after the two played to a 1-1 draw on Friday afternoon in Toronto.

Canada will play Qatar on Thursday, June 18 before wrapping up group play against Switzerland on Wednesday, June 24.
