BAD HOMBURG — Canadian Leylah Fernandez’s run at the Bad Homburg Open ended Tuesday with a 6-3, 6-4 loss to China’s Wang Xinyu in the Round of 16.
The 23-year-old from Laval, Que., finished with two aces and four double faults in the one-hour 33-minute match.
Fernandez was broken five times on six opportunities as Wang advanced on the grass courts in Germany.
The tournament was Fernandez’s final before Wimbledon, which begins Monday in London.
Fernandez, ranked 23rd in the world, will be the top-seeded Canadian in the women’s draw at the All England Club.
Victoria Mboko, of Burlington, Ont., is ranked ninth in the world but will miss Wimbledon after tearing the medial collateral ligament in her left knee at the HSBC Championships earlier this month.
