New WNBA team in Cleveland to be named Sirens

Published:

The next expansion of the Women’s National Basketball Association will be in Cleveland, and the team will be named the Sirens.

The Sirens will begin playing in 2028.

Cleveland was a founding city of the WNBA, playing as the Rockers from 1997 to 2003, but the expansion franchise will be formed under new original branding and naming.

The franchise will be the fourth of six expansion franchises planned to grow the league from 12 teams to 18 by 2030. The first was the Golden State Valkyries in 2025, followed by the Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo in 2026.

There are teams also planned to be added in Detroit (2029) and Philadelphia (2030).
