On Monday morning, I wrote in this column that it felt like the calm before the storm at TSN headquarters.
And that this storm has several different fronts.
As if preparing this week for the World Cup, CFL season kick-off, Stanley Cup Final, and the NBA Finals wasn’t enough, we got an unexpected interruption midday with a pair of blockbuster NFL trades with major ramifications.

First up, the Los Angeles Rams swung for the fences with a blockbuster trade for two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns.
The Rams traded 2024 first round pick Jared Verse, a 2027 first round pick, a 2028 second round pick, and a 2029 third round pick for Garrett, who set an NFL record with 23.0 sacks in 2025.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED 🤯

With the addition of a future Hall of Fame pass rusher, LA’s odds to win the Super Bowl were cut from +700 to +550 as the obvious favourite at FanDuel.

While we were digesting the details of the Garrett trade, the New England Patriots acquired four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2028 first round pick and a 2027 fifth round pick.

On a day when I was in meetings discussing the final details of our World Cup coverage ahead of Canada’s 2-0 win over Uzbekistan and tonight’s CFL on TSN Betting Preview Show powered by FanDuel, my phone continued to light up with details surrounding the blockbuster deals.
I didn’t even mention Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime advancing at Roland-Garros or Serena Williams announcing she is coming out of retirement at 44.

Canada is also +175 to win Group B as the second choice behind the favourite Switzerland (-130) with their first match of the tournament just 10 days away.

Meanwhile, the CFL on TSN Betting Preview Show is tonight, with the opener set for Thursday night between the Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
You can tune in to find out what Davis Sanchez, Milt Stegall, Henoc Muamba, Aaron Korolnek, and Kate Beirness have circled as their best bets for the season.
With Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final tonight in Raleigh, I’ll have multiple screens up as I juggle between the NHL action, CFL previews, World Cup preps, and reaction to whatever stunning NFL blockbuster trade happens next.
Let’s start the day with some quick thoughts on one of the most improbable Stanley Cup Final matchups we’ve seen in a long time in this Morning Coffee column for Tuesday June 2nd, 2026.
Hurricanes, Golden Knights Set For Game 1 Of Stanley Cup Final
The Vancouver Canucks trailed for an NHL-worst 2,200 minutes and 10 seconds of total game time and finished the regular season with the NHL’s worst record.
The Vegas Golden Knights trailed for 1,965 minutes and 10 seconds of total game time – the second-worst mark in the entire NHL.
Tonight, they’ll face off against the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final.
It all comes down to this.#ForgedInGold

While the Golden Knights spent a lot of the regular season playing from behind, that changed when they fired Bruce Cassidy and replaced him with John Tortorella late in the season.
Vegas finished the regular season on a 7-0-1 run to lock up first place in the Pacific Division.
The Golden Knights success under Tortorella has carried over to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where they have gone 12-4-0 while leading for 380 minutes and 51 seconds – the most of any team this postseason.
🎥 Head Coach John Tortorella: This is a group that can handle themselves.

After knocking off the Utah Mammoth and Anaheim Ducks, Vegas hit another gear with four straight wins over the Presidents Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final.
The change behind the bench sparked a turnaround that has built steady momentum since late March, and now the Golden Knights are four wins away from lifting the Stanley Cup.
Standing in their way is a Carolina Hurricanes side that is also coming off a dominant series performance in the Eastern Conference Final against the Montreal Canadiens.
After getting blown out in Game 1, the Hurricanes rallied with four straight wins to clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup Final, appearing stronger with every passing game.
The biggest question on my mind heading into Game 1 tonight is how much stock to put into Carolina’s success against the Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers, and the Ottawa Senators this postseason.
The Hurricanes swept Ottawa and Philadelphia in the first two rounds, earning nearly two weeks off before facing Montreal in the Eastern Conference Final.
It was obvious to anybody watching that Carolina was able to wear down a tired Montreal group as their series wore on, and it’s fair to wonder whether a young Habs side simply ran out of gas in that series.
That won’t be the case for a Vegas side that is coming off an extensive break after sweeping Colorado.
The Golden Knights are a bigger, stronger team than the Canadiens.
They also have veterans that have won it all before like Mark Stone, Jack Eichel, William Karlsson, Brett Howden, and Shea Theodore.
🎥 Mitch Marner: You work to be in these situations. You work to be in these moments, so just extremely grateful and excited to get going.

That core has been supported by a pair of key additions in Conn Smythe Trophy-favourite Mitch Marner and goaltender Carter Hart.
Vegas has the experience, size, depth, pedigree, and goaltending to win the Stanley Cup.
However, it’s the Hurricanes that are a -154 favourite to win the Stanley Cup at FanDuel.
The Golden Knights are +128 to win it all.
Will Carolina dominate Vegas the same way that they did Ottawa, Philadelphia, and Montreal?
Or will a Vegas side that just swept Colorado make this a series and potentially pull off another upset to win it all?
I believe the latter is more likely, although I am a little concerned about the impact a long layoff will have on the Golden Knights since they haven’t played since May 26th.
We saw what happened to the Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final following a long layoff.
Will Vegas stumble in Game 1 on the road tonight?
The time is now. pic.twitter.com/KQIUlqfJJh
— Carolina Hurricanes (@Canes) June 2, 2026
For my series best bet, I’m going to lock in the Golden Knights at +128 to win the Stanley Cup.
As impressive as the Hurricanes have looked, Vegas is a much different type of opponent than anybody Carolina has faced so far this postseason thanks in large part to their size, depth, and experience.
I’m banking on the Golden Knights taking a much more physical approach than the Hurricanes faced against the Canadiens, and relying on their top end talent like Eichel, Marner, and Stone to score some timely goals.

— TSN Hockey (@TSNHockey) June 1, 2026
As for a longshot bet, I’ll lock in Carolina to win Game 1 and Vegas to win the series at +420.
Again, after a long layoff, it’s fair to wonder whether the Golden Knights will need a period or two to adjust to the pace of the Hurricanes in Game 1.
The Golden Knights and Hurricanes are both playing in their third #StanleyCup Final.

Montreal jumped on Carolina in their series opener, only for the Hurricanes to respond with four straight wins.
While I like Vegas to win the series, I can envision a scenario where Carolina wins Game 1 on home ice but ends up losing the series.

— Carolina Hurricanes (@Canes) June 2, 2026
At +420 odds, I’m willing to roll the dice on the Hurricanes to win Game 1 and the Golden Knights to win the series.
As always, you can find my best bets for Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final @Domenic_Padula on X later this evening.
Hopefully, we can finish the NHL postseason on a high note with some winners in the Stanley Cup Final.
Have a great day, everyone!
