The 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs have been a rollercoaster.
Unfortunately for the Montreal Canadiens, the thrill of a remarkable postseason run is winding down, and they are now one loss away from the ride coming to an end.

Remember when the Canadiens completely dominated the Carolina Hurricanes as the underdog in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final?
It turns out that the longest layoff between games in the history of the Stanley Cup Playoffs hurt the Hurricanes in the short term but provided them with an edge in the long term.

Since a 6-2 loss in Game 1, Carolina has outshot Montreal a combined 108-43 while reeling off three straight wins.
While the Habs forced overtime in Games 2 and 3, they did so with 18 and 13 shots on goal in those two losses, and the one-goal margins masked a bigger concern.
“Martin St. Louis has talked all season about this Canadiens group learning through failure. Well, Carolina is showing Montreal just how much there still is to learn.”

Three takeaways from @MitchyGallo: https://t.co/ACEJGgI7cV
As the series rolled on, the Hurricanes hit their stride and their rest advantage continued to grow, culminating with last night’s 4-0 win in which they outshot the Canadiens 43-18 in front of a stunned crowd at the Bell Centre.
The exact thing that hurt Carolina in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final has helped them ever since.

With the Hurricanes up 3-1 in the series, the rest versus rust conversation is about to come full circle as the focus starts to shift to the likely Stanley Cup Final match-up.
Let’s dive into FanDuel’s lookahead lines for the Stanley Cup Final in this Morning Coffee column for Thursday May 28th, 2026.
Rest Versus Rust Debate Could Come Full Circle For Canes In Potential Stanley Cup Final Versus Vegas
The Vegas Golden Knights stunned the hockey world with a four-game series sweep against the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Final.
Vegas is the first team to sweep a Presidents’ Trophy winner in a conference final or later since 1995.
While the Golden Knights have hit their stride under head coach John Tortorella, it will be interesting to see how they handle a long layoff after beating Colorado in four.

If June 2nd is in fact the earliest possible start date for the Stanley Cup Final, then Vegas will have a full week off between games.
If the Canadiens are somehow able to pull off an upset win in Game 5 in Carolina, Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final would be pushed further back.
How will the Golden Knights respond to the long break?
Is reaching the Stanley Cup Final with Vegas vindication for Mitch Marner? Is John Tortorella downplaying his importance in helping activate the Golden Knights?

As we just saw in the Eastern Conference Final, rust could negatively impact a team coming off a long layoff.
The Canadiens jumped on the Hurricanes early in Game 1 and cruised to a 6-2 win.
However, as the Eastern Conference Final has rolled on, Carolina’s rest advantage has given them an edge.

Could the Hurricanes benefit from the same rest versus rust situation that hurt them against the Habs in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final?
In addition to avoiding a long layoff before the Stanley Cup Final, Carolina would also benefit from the extended break they had after sweeping the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers in the first two rounds.

Unlike Montreal, which battled through a pair of grueling seven-game series against the Tampa Bay Lightning and Buffalo Sabres in the first two rounds, the Hurricanes won’t have to deal with the same level of fatigue as a potential Stanley Cup Final versus Vegas rolls along.
Of course, Carolina must finish the job versus Montreal.

Then again, that hasn’t stopped bettors from jumping on the Hurricanes to win the Stanley Cup.
On Wednesday morning, Carolina was -105 to win the Stanley Cup as the favourite, with Vegas a close second choice behind them at +115 at FanDuel.

24 hours later, FanDuel has the Hurricanes at -150 to win the Stanley Cup, with the Golden Knights up to +130.
FanDuel also has early lookahead lines for the two potential Stanley Cup Final matchups.
Carolina is -166 to win a series versus Vegas.
The Golden Knights are +138 to beat the Hurricanes as well as -146 to win a potential series versus Montreal if the Habs somehow pulled off the unthinkable.

Any bet on those lookahead series lines would void if the series matchup that you bet on doesn’t come to fruition.
Yes, Vegas just swept Colorado and has played its best hockey since Tortorella took over behind the bench.
The question being asked now is how much of an impact the time off will have on the Golden Knights as the rest versus rust conversation comes full circle with Carolina potentially in position to benefit this time around.
Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final was an outlier.
If the Hurricanes can finish the job versus the Canadiens, they could benefit from the same circumstance that hurt them against the Habs in a potential Stanley Cup Final match-up versus Vegas.
Have a great day, everyone!
