Chicoutimi claims first QMJHL title since 1994 with Game 6 win over Moncton

Published:

The Chicoutimi Saguenéens have won their first Gilles-Courteau Trophy in 32 years after taking down the Moncton Wildcats 5-1 in Game 6 of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League finals on Sunday.

This is also Chicoutimi’s first appearance in the final since 1997, and the win will send them to the Memorial Cup in Kelowna.

Alexis Toussaint, Liam Lefebvre, Emmanuel Vermette, Mavrick Lachance, and Christophe Berthelot scored goals for Chicoutimi, while netminder Lucas Beckman made 23 saves.

Chicoutimi found themselves in a position to close out the series Sunday after winning a wild Game 5 by rallying from a four-goal deficit on the road in Moncton.

More to come.
