One of the most successful backend tandems in Canadian curling history has decided to part ways.

Team Kerri Einarson announced on Thursday they will go forward without longtime third Val Sweeting.

Alternate Krysten Karwacki and coach Reid Carruthers will no longer be with the team as well, the press release said.

“I’m not sure exactly what the future holds yet,” Sweeting said in a statement. “But I look forward to seeing where the next chapter takes me.”

Einarson, Sweeting, Shannon Birchard and Briane Harris joined forces ahead of the 2018-19 season, making headlines in the curling world as all four players were skips with their former teams.

The move worked out well to say the least as Einarson and company won four straight Scotties Tournament of Hearts from 2020 to 2023. They won their fifth Scotties this year in Mississauga with Karlee Burgess now playing lead instead of Harris.

Team Einarson missed the playoffs at the 2021 Canadian Curling Trials after losing a tiebreaker to Team Krista Scharf. They dropped the semifinal of the 2025 Canadian Curling Trials to Nova Scotia’s Team Christina Black in in November.

Sweeting, a 38-year-old from Alberta, also won five Grand Slams during her time with Team Einarson.

Despite the success domestically, Einarson and company haven’t been able to reach the top of the mountain over their four appearances at the World Women’s Curling Championship. They won bronze medals in 2022 and 2023 before settling for silver at this year’s women’s worlds in Calgary, losing to Team Xenia Schwaller of the Switzerland in the final.

Before joining Einarson’s rink in Gimli, Man., Sweeting skipped teams in Alberta for many years, losing back-to-back Scotties finals in 2014 and 2015.

Carruthers, 41, joined Team Einarson in 2022 and also retired from men’s competitive curling at the end of this season.

Karwacki, 34 ,has been an alternate on Team Einarson since 2021.

The Canadian curling champions said they will have an update on their team’s future “coming soon.”
