Swedish curling great Niklas Edin announced on Sunday he is stepping away from the sport.
“Dream of that young foolish boy came true…and then some!“ Edin said in an Instagram post. ”Which leads me to make a tough and scary decision. To quit while ahead and have time to explore what else is out there!"
The 40-year-old from Karlstad, Sweden made a point to say he will still be involved in curling, “Watching, coaching, commentating and hopefully playing in the Rock League!”
Edin’s resume is extensive and will easily go down as one of the greatest curlers of all-time.
He won his first of a record eight World Men’s Curling Championships in 2013, beating Canada’s Brad Jacobs in the final from Victoria, B.C.
Edin and his Swedish rink defeated Canada’s Team Matt Dunstone in this year’s men’s worlds final in Ogden, Utah.
The Winter Olympics was another place Edin found plenty of success. Edin has skipped Sweden at the last five Olympics, winning the bronze medal in Sochi, Russia in 2014 and silver in 2018 from Pyeongchang, South Korea before finally striking gold at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, China.
Team Edin finished off the podium at this year’s Olympics in Cortina, Italy.
Edin also won eight European Curling Championships and four Grand Slam titles.
