The final day of play has arrived at The Players Championship with four out of the six Canadians in the field - Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, Nick Taylor, and PGA Tour rookie Sudarshan Yellamaraju - still competing at TPC Sawgrass for a share of the massive $25 million purse set to be handed out on Sunday.
Pendrith got the day going for the Canadians after finishing Saturday at even-par and 1-under for the tournament. His Sunday started well, going for birdie on Hole 2, but misstepped on Holes 8 and 10 with bogeys. Pendrith rebounded from that, however, with back-to-back birdies on 12 and 13, but double-bogeyed on 16 to finish 1-over on the day and even for the tournament.
Abbotsford, B.C.’s Taylor teed off next for the Canadian contingent after entering the final day 2-under for the week. His Saturday start was not ideal, bogeying on the opening hole of the day and on the 6th. He wrapped the front nine with a birdie while also grabbing one on 11. A bogey on Hole 13, however, set him back to 1-over for the round and 1-under for the weekend as a whole.
Winnipeg’s Yellamaraju, who surged up the leaderboard on Saturday with a red-hot start, once again was great to begin Sunday. The rookie opened his day with three birdies in the first four holes and added one more to wrap up the front nine. Yellamaraju bogeyed on 12, but rebounded with birdies on Holes 15 and 16, wrapping up a very solid tournament in which he finished tied for fifth at 9-under.
Conners was the final Canadian to tee off and entered the final day four shots back of the lead. The two-time PGA Tour winner had a rough start to his Sunday, however, posting back-to-back bogeys on Holes 2 and 3 and two more on 5 and 6. He found birdies on 9 and 10 for some positive momentum, but couldn’t do much more beyond that.
The 34-year-old added a bogey on 11 and a birdie on 16 to finish his day 2-over and his tournament 6-under. Conners entered the weekend a promising 8-under, but couldn’t keep up the momentum.
