Four Canadians will compete at U.S. Open in golf’s third major on TSN

The PGA Tour touches down at Shinnecock Hills in New York as the third major of the year, the U.S. Open, tees off this week on TSN and TSN+.

The tournament gets underway at 6:30a.m. ET / 3:30a.m. PT on TSN2 on Thursday, and runs until Sunday evening. Click here for a full broadcast schedule.

Four Canadians will be in the running at this year’s U.S. Open - Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., Winnipeg’s Nick Taylor, Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ont., and Mississauga, Ont.’s Sudarshan Yellamaraju.

The 34-year-old Conners will look to replicate his results from two years ago at the U.S. Open, when it was hosted at Pinehurst. He finished even on the tournament and tied for ninth place. Conners missed the cut in his first five tries at the U.S. Open, and was forced to withdraw from last year’s tournament at Oakmont due to a wrist injury.

Taylor has made the cut three times at the U.S. Open. He finished 8-over in last year’s tournament, which was good enough to tie for 23rd. His best score at a U.S. Open came at Pebble Beach in 2019, when he tied for 43rd despite shooting a strong 2-over.

The 28-year-old Silverman earned a spot in the tournament by posting a 7-under to share medalist honours at BallenIsles Country Club earlier in June. Silverman has never won a tournament on the PGA Tour, though he has one win in the Korn Ferry Tour in 2017.

Yellamaraju has become a name to watch in his rookie season on the PGA Tour. The 24-year-old finished tied for eighth at the Canadian Open on Sunday, where his 12-under was the lowest round for any Canadian at TPC Toronto. He told TSN’s Bob Weeks after the tournament that it “feels awesome” to be the lowest-scoring Canadian, but reinforced that he knows he can play better moving forward.

“I’m just trying to be the best I can,” Yellamaraju said to Weeks on Sunday. “I’m just trying to be the best I can be. I want to just keep improving as much as I can.”

Yellamaraju has three top-10 finishes to his name this season, including a 9-under performance at The Players Championship that placed him tied for fifth, and a tied-sixth finish at the Houston Open a week later. Yellamaraju is currently the highest-ranked Canadian in the FedEx Cup standings at 44th.

Other players to watch include defending champion J.J. Spaun, PGA Championship winner Aaron Rai and World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who seeks his first-ever title at the U.S. Open.
