Jackson Koivun is going pro.
The world’s top amateur golfer announced on Friday that he is foregoing his senior year at Auburn and will join the PGA Tour following next week’s U.S. Open. The tournament at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island will be his final appearance as an amateur.
“From bringing home a pair of national championships to the late nights and early mornings grinding at the facility and competing alongside guys I’ll call brothers for the rest of my life, I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Koivun said in a statement. “With that being said, I’ve decided to forego my senior year to pursue my lifelong dream of playing on the PGA Tour. To my teammates, coaches, support staff, fans and most importantly, my family, thank you for supporting me in this chapter of my life. I am incredibly excited for what’s ahead, but no matter where this game takes me, I will always carry the A-U with me as a proud member of the Auburn family.”
A 21-year-old native of San Jose, Koivun earned Tour membership at the end of last season through the PGA Tour U Accelerated program which recognizes collegiate performance. He deferred the membership to return to the Tigers for his junior season. He finishes his Auburn career with a program record 11 wins as the school claimed a second national title in three years.
Shortly after announcing his decision to turn pro, Koivun also revealed an apparel deal with Malbon.
Koivun’s first pro event will be the John Deere Classic set for July 2 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, IL.
