Konsta Helenius scored the overtime winner to send Finland to a 1-0 victory over Switzerland in the gold medal game at the men’s World Hockey Championship on Sunday.

The goal broke an intense back-and-forth between two sides battling furiously for gold for over 10 minutes in the overtime period.

Justus Annunen turned away all 22 shots he faced in net for the Finns, while Leonardo Genoni stopped 26 of 27 shots in net for the Swiss.

It was a tightly contested game through regulation for both sides.

Power-play opportunities were presented early and often throughout, with the teams a combined 0-for-9 on the man advantage after 60 minutes. Finland had perhaps the most dangerous opportunity, when a pair of penalties with seconds remaining in the first led to almost two minutes of 5-on-3 to open the second frame. Switzerland was able to survive the attack.

Finland claims its fifth gold medal at this tournament with the victory. The Finns won their first gold in 1995, and followed that up with victories in 2011, 2019 and 2022.

Earlier on Sunday, Norway defeated Canada 3-2 in the bronze medal game to claim their first medal in tournament history and leave Canada without a medal for the third consecutive year.
