HOUSTON -- Astros center fielder Daulton Varsho underwent left arthroscopic wrist surgery on Tuesday, a procedure that will sideline him for the entire postseason.
The Astros announced the development prior to Game 2 of their American League Wild Card series against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.
Varsho was left off of Houston’s active roster for the series after his wrist became increasingly problematic down the stretch. He was replaced initially by Brice Matthews, who likewise ended up on the injured list.
Lucas Spence started the Game 1 loss against Chicago and is slated to do the same in Game 2.
Varsho, 30, struggled at the plate after being acquired from Toronto Blue Jays at the trade deadline, hitting .172 for Houston with five homers in 41 games. However, Varsho’s Gold Glove-level defense was widely viewed as an upgrade for the Astros.
In addition, Varsho offered recent playoff experience as a regular with the Blue Jays, who finished one win shy of a World Series championship last season. He has one year of arbitration eligibility remaining on his service time clock.
