Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Connor Seabold was designated for assignment on Wednesday as starting pitcher Max Scherzer was reinstated from the injured list for his start against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Seabold was acquired via trade from the Detroit Tigers on May 27 after he was designated for assignment by the franchise just a few days earlier.
The 30-year-old right-handed reliever struggled in his five appearances with the Blue Jays, posting an 8.10 ERA with just one strikeout over 3.1 innings of work.
Seabold had a 3.45 ERA with the Tigers over 11 appearances earlier this season.
The 41-year-old Scherzer will attempt to get his season on track as he hasn’t pitched since April 24 with right forearm tendinitis and left ankle inflammation.
After a strong first start against the Colorado Rockies on March 31, Scherzer struggled mightily, failing to reach the fourth inning in three of his next four starts.
Scherzer’s ERA skyrocketed to 9.64 ERA as a result.
The right-handed future Hall-of-Famer signed a one-year, $3 million deal to return to the Jays in early March after a memorable 2025 season, which saw Scherzer pitch in Game 7 of the World Series.
Toronto enters Wednesday’s series finale against the Phillies with a 33-35 record, currently tied for the third and final Wild Card spot in the American League.
