Blue Jays’ Guerrero, Gimenez return to lineup for series opener against Red Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays are getting two bats back for their series opener against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Andres Gimenez are both in the starting lineup.

Guerrero will be batting third and playing first base, while Gimenez is hitting eighth and playing shortstop.

Guerrero missed two games due to back tightness, while Giménez sat out Sunday’s series finale against the New York Yankees with left wrist soreness.

Giménez appeared to suffer his injury during Saturday’s loss to the Yankees when he slid into first base while trying to beat Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler to the bag.

Guerrero first experienced the tightness in his back on Friday.

Guerrero, who’s currently in the first season of a 14-year, $500 million contract, has struggled this season by his standards, owning a .280 batting average with just three home runs and 27 RBIs.

He also has a .372 on-base percentage and a career-low .366 slugging percentage alongside 30 strikeouts across 246 at-bats.

Guerrero has not hit a home run since May 17 against the Detroit Tigers and has not gone deep at home in 2026.

Expectations were high for Guerrero entering this season after putting together one of the best playoff performances in history last October, hitting .397 with eight homers, 14 walks and 15 runs batted in alongside a incredible 1.289 on-base plus slugging percentage over 18 games.

The 27-year-old Giménez is hitting .222 with six home runs and 30 RBIs alongside a .620 OPS over 68 games this season.

Toronto enters Tuesday’s game against the Red Sox with a 34-38 record, two games behind the Athletics for the third and final Wild Card spot in the American League.
