Blue Jays reinstate RHP Arrighetti, recall INF Schneider, place INF Smith on injured list

The Toronto Blue Jays made a handful of roster moves on Friday afternoon ahead of their series opener against the New York Yankees, highlighted by reinstating right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti from the 15-day Injured List and recalling utility man Davis Schneider from Triple-A Buffalo.

Infielder Josh Smith was placed on the 10-day Injured List with left hamstring inflammation while left-handed pitcher Brendan Cellucci was optioned to Triple-A in corresponding moves.

Arrighetti, 26, was acquired from the Houston Astros in exchange for centre fielder Daulton Varsho earlier this month at the trade deadline, but hasn’t pitched in a game for the Blue Jays due to an uncommon foot condition called Morton’s neuroma.

Arrighetti had two rehab starts with the Buffalo Bisons, most recently allowing two runs on three hits alongside a walk and three strikeouts over 3.2 innings of work on Sunday.

The third-year player had a 7-5 record with a 4.60 ERA and 87 strikeouts over 17 starts (88 innings pitched) during his time with the Astros this season, last pitching in the Majors on July 24.

Arrighetti will be available Friday night as left-handed reliever Mason Fluharty will serve as the opener in the Bronx.

Schneider, 27, last appeared in a game with the Blue Jays on Aug. 9 and is hitting .142 with three homers and 12 RBIs over 62 games in 2026.

Over 37 games in Triple-A, Schneider is hitting .219 with six home runs and 21 RBIs alongside an .894 OPS.

Acquired from the Texas Rangers earlier this month, Smith is hitting .220 with three homers and 11 RBIs over 59 games split between Texas and Toronto.

The Blue Jays enter play Friday with a 63-66 record, a half game behind the Rangers and the Minnesota Twins for the last wild-card spot in the American League.
