Guerrero Jr., Cease and Varland join Clement as Blue Jays All-Stars

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has been named the starting first baseman for the American League at the MLB All-Star Game. He will join fellow Toronto Blue Jay Ernie Clement, who was named as the starting second baseman after earning the most votes for an American League player during Phase 1 of All-Star voting.

Blue Jays manager John Schneider will manage the AL team, thanks to the Blue Jays’ World Series appearance in 2025. He will be joined by select members of the Blue Jays staff.

Guerrero is slashing .265/.346/.346 with four home runs and 35 RBIs.

It’s his sixth consecutive All-Star appearance. He and his father Vladimir Guerrero Sr. are the first father-son duo to be named as All-Stars six times.

Starting pitcher Dylan Cease also named as an All-Star for the first time in his career. Cease has a 2.79 earned-run average in 16 starts with the Blue Jays.

He pitched seven scoreless innings while striking out nine in the Blue Jays’ 2-0 win over the Mariners on Friday.

Blue Jays reliever Louis Varland was also named to the roster on Saturday. The 28-year-old has been fantastic since he took over for Jeff Hoffman as the closer in the Blue jays’ bullpen, converting all 18 of his save opportunities.

On the season, the fifth-year righty has an ERA of 0.96 with 65 strikeouts over 47.0 innings pitched.

Cease and Varland were each named All-Stars thanks to voting on the player ballot, while Guerrero and Clement were elected on the fan balloting.

The Blue Jays lost 11-0 to the Seattle Mariners on Saturday to drop to 42-47 on the season. They sit third in the AL East, 12 games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the division lead and three games back of the Texas Rangers for the final AL Wild Card spot.

The All-Star game will be held on July 14th in Philadelphia
