Miles to start Wednesday vs. Royals as Blue Jays fill hole left by Bieber

Published:

Reliever Spencer Miles will start Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals as the Toronto Blue Jays turn to their bullpen to replace injured pitcher Shane Bieber.

Bieber was scheduled to start Wednesday before he was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right teres major inflammation. Toronto recalled right-handed pitcher Chad Dallas in a corresponding move.

Miles will look to get the Blue Jays off to a strong start as the team tries to bounce back from a 5-3 loss to the Royals on Tuesday. The 26-year-old righty has a 5-2 record with a 3.02 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP through 40 games this season.

Miles has started four games this season, pitching four innings in two starts last month and going three innings over two starts in May.

With Tuesday’s loss, the Blue Jays now sit two and a half games back in the American League wild-card race with four teams stuck between them and the Cleveland Guardians, who occupy the final AL playoff spot.
