PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Luis Arraez left Thursday’s game against Milwaukee with a sprained left ankle after he tried to avoid a tag at first base.
Arraez is a three-time batting champion and entered the game batting .311 to lead to the National League.
Arraez hit a grounder to shortstop Cooper Pratt, and a wide throw pulled first baseman Jake Bauers off the bag.
Arraez dived to his right to avoid the tag and immediately grabbed his ankle. Arraez, obtained from San Francisco at the trade deadline, stayed down for a while as trainers tended to him. He eventually hobbled off the field with assistance.
He left with the game tied 1-1 in the sixth inning. The Phillies needed to beat the Brewers and have the San Diego Padres lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers later in the night to clinch their fifth straight playoff appearance.
Bryson Stott moved from third base to second and Edmundo Sosa took over at third.
