Hunter Greene has undergone Tommy John surgery for a second time, the Cincinnati Reds confirmed on Thursday.
The surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament took place a day earlier.
Greene, 27, previously underwent the procedure in 2019. He is now expected to miss most, if not all, of the 2027 season.
A native of Los Angeles, Greene was the second overall pick of the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft. He made his big league debut in 2022 and was an All-Star in 2024.
Greene only made five starts this season. He was 2-2 with a 6.83 earned run average and 1.373 WHIP over 27.2 innings pitched. Greene struck out 33 batters and walked nine.
The Reds (57-62) currently trail the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final National League wild-card spot by 5.5 games. The team is on course to miss the playoffs for the 11th time in 13 seasons. The Reds last won a playoff game in 2012.
