The San Francisco Giants appear to be open for business.
While The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports the team has not yet fully committed to selling ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, head executive Buster Posey and the team have begun to put out feelers across the league on a number of players.
At 29-43, the Giants own the second-worst record in the National League and currently sit nine games back of a wild-card spot. The chances of returning to contention in manager Tony Vitello’s first season seem remote at best.
Rosenthal suggests the most obvious candidates for trades are impending free agents, Robbie Ray and Luis Arraez, while veteran third baseman Matt Chapman, who has four years remaining on a six-year, $151 million deal after this season, could also be potentially moved. Rafael Devers and Willy Adames appear to be long shots for trades, while ace Logan Webb is viewed as untouchable.
An American League Cy Young Award winner in 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays, Ray is in the final year of a five-year, $115 million deal. Through 14 starts, the 34-year-old lefty is 4-6 with a 4.42 earned run average and WHIP of 1.391 over 73.1 innings of work. The two-time All-Star has struck out 66 batters and walked 36.
Arraez, 29, has won three batting titles with three different teams. He’s playing on a one-year, $12 million contract. Arraez is currently batting .319 with 88 hits, two home runs, 26 runs batted in and an OPS of .787.
Chapman, 33, is in his third season with the team. He’s batting .261 with seven home runs, 37 runs batted in and an OPS of .762. His 3.2 WAR is only 0.9 down from his full season in 2025.
