The LA Clippers named general manager Trent Redden as the team’s interim president of basketball operations while Lawrence Frank serves his six-month suspension stemming from the NBA’s investigation into salary cap circumvention.
The announcement was made via a video message from interim team governor and CEO John Gibson to fans. Gibson, who is serving as interim governor while Steve Ballmer serves his one-year suspension, also announced that assistant general manager Mark Hughes will take over GM duties in the meantime.
Redden joined the Clippers’ front office in 2017 after a long run with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was promoted from assistant general manager to GM in 2023. Hughes also came to the Clippers in 2017 after several years as an assistant coach in the NBA after his pro playing career.
The suspensions of Ballmer and Frank came down after a yearlong investigation into the Clippers by law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Along with Ballmer’s suspension, the NBA issued a $30 million fine and the forfeiture of five first-round draft picks.
Ballmer recently accepted the NBA’s punishment, saying in a statement, in part, that though there are still disagreements with the findings, “We are complying with the penalties assessed by the league, have paid the fine and are moving forward.”
