Former Toronto Raptors point guard Jose Calderon has been promoted to the Cleveland Cavaliers’ assistant general manager position, it was announced Friday.
The Cavs made a series of front office moves Friday, headlined by the promotion of Brandon Weems to general manager under president Koby Altman. Jon Nichols was named an associate GM and Brendon Yu was also named an assistant GM alongside Calderon.
Calderon played for the Cavaliers during the 2017-18 season and joined their front office in 2022 as a special advisor. Prior to that, he worked for the National Basketball Players Association.
The 44-year-old Spaniard is best known as a crafty floor general for his time in Toronto from 2005 to 2013. He was the team’s starting point guard for a number of seasons, including in 2008-09 when he averaged a career-best 12.8 points and 8.9 assists to go along with setting the NBA’s single-season record in free throw percentage (.981).
His 525 games played are the fourth-most in Raptors history and he also sits second on the team’s all-time assists list (3,770) behind Kyle Lowry.
All in all, Calderon spent 14 seasons in the NBA and also had stints for the Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Atlanta Hawks in addition to the Raps and Cavs.
