LeBron plays coy on free agency decision: ‘Going to be fun wherever I land’

LeBron James is not tipping his hand regarding his next destination.

The 41-year-old NBA superstar joined Indiana Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton for a live Mind The Game podcast taping Thursday at Fanatics Fest in New York City and did not give much in the way of clues for where he’ll decide to play next season or when he’ll reveal his choice.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Haliburton attempted to get the 23-time All-Star to discuss his free agency but to no avail, with James asking Haliburton, “Didn’t we already talk about this in the back?”

He later referenced a handful of teams he’s been connected to but offered no indication any team was a frontrunner.

“I hear the Warriors… I hear the Sixers," James said, while also referencing the Miami Heat.

He did show appreciation for his most recent team, the Los Angeles Lakers, after announcing just prior to the start of free agency he would play elsewhere in 2026-27.

“Shout out my former team. I spent eight great years with the Los Angeles Lakers … That was an unbelievable ride, and I am looking forward to what comes next as I wind down my journey," James said.

“It’s going to be fun wherever I land.”

LeBron’s tenure in Los Angeles was highlighted by a championship in 2020 at the Disney World bubble necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. He also became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in February of 2023 and helped lead the Lakers to the playoffs in six of his eight seasons in the City of Angels.

The 2020 title was the fourth of James’ career, joining the 2016 championship he won with his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and the two he won with the Miami Heat in 2012 and 2013.

James averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game in 60 appearances for the Lakers during the regular season in 2025-26.
