Miami’s undefeated season is no more.

The top seed in the Mid-American Conference’s tournament fell 87-83 to No. 8 Massachusetts in the quarter-finals. Minutemen forward Leonardo Bettiol led all scorers with 24. Brant Byers led the RedHawks with 17.

The RedHawks entered the tournament at 31-0 and were the No. 20 team in the country.

Winning the MAC tournament and earning the automatic berth was the only surefire way for the RedHawks to ensure a spot in next week’s NCAA Tournament. Despite being the lone undefeated program in Div. I, Miami’s credentials have been disparaged by some, including longtime NCAA coach-turned pundit Bruce Pearl, due to the quality of their opposition.

The RedHawks have earned berths to March Madness on 17 previous occasions. Miami has gone as far as the Sweet 16 on four occasions, most recently in 1999. The RedHawks last played in the Tournament in 2007.

The March Madness field will be unveiled on Sunday evening with the tournament proper getting underway on Mar. 19.
