KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce was ruled out of Sunday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs after suffering a left heel injury with 1:45 left in the first quarter.
X-rays were negative, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, and Pierce will undergo further evaluation Monday.
The injury is to the same leg on which Pierce had surgery in March.
Pierce, the Colts' top wideout, was unable to put any weight on his left leg and needed assistance to the injury tent at Arrowhead Stadium. After an initial exam in the tent, Pierce was carted to the locker room and, according to the NBC broadcast, was taken to the X-ray room at the stadium.
Pierce was initially listed as questionable to return before quickly being downgraded to out in the second quarter.
Pierce, who signed a four-year $114 million contract in March, was expected to be a centerpiece of the Colts' offense this season after undergoing ankle surgery in March to address a lingering condition.
But his recovery from the procedure spilled into training camp and lingered past the preseason. He finally returned to practice late last month and was expecting to ramp up his playing time in the weeks to come after being cleared to play in Week 1.
With Pierce out, veteran receiver Laquon Treadwell was taking a majority of his snaps against the Chiefs.
