The Washington Commanders ruled out two starters for Sunday’s game in London, though three others remain a possibility to return. Guard Sam Cosmi and safety Nick Cross did not travel with the team to London Tuesday night for their Week 4 game against the Colts.
Both were considered longshots to make the trip; each was hurt in Week 2 at Dallas. Cosmi suffered a concussion late in the 37-20 loss while Cross played despite an injury the team has described as “internal” but needed to have surgery after the game and stayed overnight at a hospital in Dallas.
Three other injured starters did accompany Washington (1-2) to London, as coach Dan Quinn said they would on Monday: quarterback Jayden Daniels (elbow), tight end Chig Okonkwo (hamstring) and linebacker Frankie Luvu (groin). Quinn said all three would participate in at least some portion of practice this week. Washington will have a light workout Wednesday after arriving earlier that morning.
Daniels sustained his injury in Week 2, but is considered week to week. Because it’s to his left and non-throwing elbow, he’s already resumed some throwing. Marcus Mariota would start vs. the Colts if Daniels can’t play.
If Luvu can’t play, then Kain Medrano would start alongside rookie Sonny Styles. Both players intercepted a pass in Sundays’ 33-31 win over Seattle. Medrano, a 2025 fifth-round pick, returned his 50 yards for a touchdown. He opened the season as the Commanders’ fifth inside linebacker and a special teams performer, but injuries forced him into his first snaps from scrimmage in the NFL. Leo Chenal fractured his neck in that win and Jordan Magee injured his hamstring in Week 1 and is on injured reserve.
Okonkwo, like Luvu, has missed the last two weeks.
With Cosmi once more sidelined, Nick Allegretti is expected to starter at right guard with veteran Lucas Patrick at center. Patrick, signed after Week 1, left Sunday’s win with a boot on his left foot. He missed four snaps during the game because of ankle injury.
