Eagles’ All-Pro tackle Johnson announces retirement

Published:

Lane Johnson will not be returning to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The two-time Super Bowl-winning offensive tackle announced his retirement on Monday.

Johnson, 36, appeared in the team’s first three games in 2026, but did not play in the Eagles’ 24-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. According to the team, Johnson was unavailable due to a personal matter.

The fourth overall selection of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma, Johnson was in his 14th NFL season.

In a statement, Johnson said that he intended to finish the season, but realized that familial priorities were paramount this time.

“I deeply wanted to gut it out for one more year; to take the field with my brothers for one last season,” Johnson wrote. “But after a lot of reflection, I’ve realized that my personal and family priorities in my life have changed. Right now, it is critical that I focus on my mental health. I owe it to my teammates, coaches, the organization and the fans to have my head and heart 100 per cent in the game. And right now my heart is telling me that it’s time to say goodbye to football.”

A native of Groveton, TX, Johnson ends his career after 171 career games. A six-time Pro Bowler, Johnson was a key component of the Eagles’ title teams in 2018 and 2025. Johnson was named to five All-Pro teams, including First Team nods in 2017 and 2022.

The Eagles (2-2) return to action on Sunday with a visit to the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1).
