With no trade materializing at any point over the offseason, Anthony Richardson will start the season at the Indianapolis Colts’ backup quarterback.
Head coach Shane Steichen confirmed Tuesday that the former Florida pivot will serve as QB2 to Daniel Jones.
Richardson, 24, had asked for a trade to kickstart his career elsewhere.
The fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, Richardson has struggled mightily in his time as a pro. He made only two appearances last season, having missed time with an orbital bone injury. Richardson’s one completed pass went for nine yards.
A native of Miami, Richardson has appeared in 17 games across three seasons, starting 15 of them. He’s thrown for 2,400 yards on 177-for-350 passing with 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Richardson has added 634 yards on the ground on 115 carries.
Former Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard, a sixth-round pick in 2025, is the other QB on the roster.
The Colts open up their season on Sept. 13 with a visit from the Baltimore Ravens.
